Last week, the House Oversight Committee interviewed Lesley Groff and Bill Gates, two figures who have loomed large in the Epstein saga for years now. First up was Groff, Epstein’s longtime assistant who appeared for another of the Committee’s closed-door, unsworn interviews last Tuesday. She professed ignorance of Epstein’s crimes, despite it being very evident from the files that she had been intimately involved in her boss’s day-to-day activities. The following day, Bill Gates — whose name is mentioned nearly 3,000 times in the files — appeared before the Committee, where he stated that he, too, was unaware of the full extent of Epstein’s criminal conduct. He also claimed that the financier had tried to blackmail him into maintaining a friendship.

And in another notable development, we got our clearest glimpse yet into the chaos inside the White House last summer as public pressure mounted on the administration to release the files. According to the Times, Trump made it clear to his underlings that he wanted the scandal buried, and advisers gathered regularly in the Situation Room to strategize in what ultimately proved to be futile efforts to defuse the situation.

There were two major developments last week in the push for accountability and justice on the Epstein case. At the state level, the bipartisan New Mexico Survivor’s Truth Commission announced plans to issue 14 subpoenas as part of its ongoing investigation into Zorro Ranch, the sprawling property owned by Epstein. The Commission says its subpoenas will not be directed at specific individuals, but instead at organizations, including banks, nonprofits, and law enforcement agencies involved in investigating Epstein’s crimes.

Meanwhile, back in D.C., Democratic Sen. Ron Wyden continued his follow-the-money approach to uncovering the truth and grilled Trump’s Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent during a Senate Finance Committee hearing. The exchange grew tense and the Senator doubled down by sending a letter to House Oversight sharing his findings and demanding they interview Epstein’s friend and benefactor, Apollo Global Management co-founder Leon Black. The House Oversight Committee has unsuccessfully requested to interview Black, whose son currently heads the Development Finance Corporation under Trump and has his own personal ties to Epstein. And in a story to keep an eye on, the committee has two major interviews scheduled this week, with both Bill Gates and Epstein’s long-term assistant, Lesley Groff slated to appear.

On Friday, Trump’s former Attorney General, Pam Bondi, appeared before the House Oversight Committee for a closed-door, unsworn interview. While the full transcript of Bondi’s interview is not yet available, a public copy of her opening statement, blaming Todd Blanche for the DOJ’s botched rollout of the files, has been released. According to members who were present, the interview that followed was marked by repeated intervention from DOJ lawyers, who acted as Bondi’s personal counsel and regularly blocked questions, particularly regarding her interactions with Trump administration officials and the president himself. Bondi’s evasiveness isn’t new – she was similarly slippery during her last appearance before Congress. Still, some had hoped for more transparency now that she is no longer officially a part of the administration. After the interview, frustrated Democrats called for both Blanche and FBI Director Kash Patel to appear before House Oversight to address Bondi’s claims.

In other developments, President Trump has refiled his previously dismissed defamation lawsuit against the Wall Street Journal over its reporting on his crude birthday card to Jeffrey Epstein. Meanwhile, Sen. Thomas Massie, who lost his Kentucky primary last week, has vowed to reveal more names of previously undisclosed individuals connected to Epstein before leaving office in January.

Tomorrow, Trump’s former Attorney General Pam Bondi will come before the House Oversight Committee for a closed-door interview.

Initially promising transparency, Bondi spent her time at the helm of the DOJ blocking the full release of the files, despite the legal obligation to comply. Following her intense appearance back in February at the House Judiciary Committee hearing (filled with personal attacks and screaming), Bondi became a poster child for the Trump administration’s Epstein cover-up — possibly factoring into her firing back in April.

As American Freakshow’s Nina Burleigh and Katie Chenoweth covered in their piece yesterday, Bondi’s ties to Trump date back to 2013, when she solicited a political donation for her Florida Attorney General re-election PAC. Bondi served in this capacity in Florida from 2011-2019, and while she wasn’t the state Attorney General when Epstein’s sweetheart deal was executed, she was certainly swimming in the same political waters as those involved.

Although it will probably take a week or so for the full transcript of it to be released, tomorrow’s interview and Bondi’s answers will be important to getting at the inner workings of the Trump administration’s cover-up.

At The Cover-Up, we have been following the Epstein case, breaking stories, connecting missing links and calling out the lies from this administration. Going into the hearing, here are some questions that have emerged from our coverage of the Epstein files that we would like to see Bondi answer.

1. Did Donald Trump or anyone in his administration instruct you to withhold or destroy any materials related to him from the Epstein Files? Specifically, did Trump discuss the three FBI interviews naming him that were initially withheld by the DOJ?

2. Did you ever interview anyone connected with Les Wexner about the source of the money that enabled Epstein?

3. In January 2025 the DOJ ordered all Epstein files at SDNY to be sent to Washington, effectively closing the SDNY investigation that was still following leads from at least 20 survivors. What was the rationale for shutting it down at that point?

4. Did you ever interview Richard Kahn about the contents of the safe in Epstein’s mansion, which he removed after the FBI searched the house? Have you ever asked FBI agents why they allowed that evidence to be removed? If not, why not?

5. French and Norwegian authorities have opened investigations based on the files you have already released. Have you ever communicated with them specifically about the International Peace Institute or the movement of young foreign women through the modeling agencies in New York?

6. Why did Todd Blanche interview Ghislaine Maxwell in July 2025 after the DOJ announced that it had concluded its review? Was the decision tied to the Wall Street Journal’s publication of the birthday letter addressed to Epstein by Trump?

7. Was the DOJ’s decision not to investigate or prosecute any potential clients or co-conspirators based solely on photo and video evidence, as is stated in this internal communication to FBI Director Kash Patel? Did this decision really not include evidence found in financial records or text-based documents?

8. Did you ever talk to anyone at the CIA or the State Department about Epstein’s interactions with them?

9. Did you speak to anyone about Epstein’s travel to the Middle East or contacts with government officials like Mohammed Bin Salman, Ehud Barak, and Mahmoud Abbas?

10. Did you ever speak to Secretary Hegeseth’s top aide, Tim Parlatore, about hiring Epstein’s personal lawyer, Darren Indyke — the same Indyke who failed to disclose a $3 million mansion Epstein purchased for him — a month after taking the case to defend Trump against federal charges tied to the theft of classified documents found at Mar-a-Lago?

Last week, Republican Rep. Thomas Massie lost his Kentucky primary race against Ed Gallrein, a relative unknown. Democratic Rep Ro Khanna, who co-authored the Epstein Files Transparency Act with Massie — which became the law mandating DOJ release the files — said Massie lost because “he had the guts to take on the Epstein class.” Special interest groups poured millions into the race, making it the most expensive House race in history. Massie is just the latest GOP Congress member picked off by Trump as he seeks revenge on anyone within his party who dared to challenge him on the Epstein files. Meanwhile, the House Oversight Committee’s investigation continued. On Thursday, the Oversight Committee interviewed Sarah Kellen, who was one of Epstein’s long-term assistants covered in his controversial 2008 plea deal. While the transcript of the interview still hasn’t been released, Kellan reportedly said she was abused by Epstein on Zorro Ranch and named three new alleged abusers in Epstein’s ring. And even though the Trump administration is successfully stalling accountability here in the States, there continues to be progress abroad. Last week, both the UK and France opened new probes, and Norway’s parliament recently announced it is allocating millions of dollars towards an Epstein commission.

Last week, survivors of Epstein bravely spoke up about the government’s repeated mishandling of its investigation into his criminal activity. In Palm Beach—the South Florida town where Epstein ran his sex-trafficking empire for years and was eventually charged with sexual abuse of a minor—Democratic members of the House Oversight Committee held a shadow field hearing that Rep. Robert Garcia said was intentionally centered on lifting up survivors’ voices. Victims shared emotional accounts of their experiences: One had been trafficked to Epstein while he was under house arrest and later had her name released by the Pam Bondi-led DOJ despite her requests to remain anonymous. (In contrast, Epstein’s former neighbor, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, was permitted to keep his hearing behind closed doors, with the transcript quietly released a week later.) Survivors’ voices continued to reverberate elsewhere, as footage of the powerful testimonies from New York was also released. And in a developing story today, the House Oversight Committee interviewed Tova Noel, the prison guard who believes she was the last person to see Epstein alive.

Early last week, a federal judge unsealed a note allegedly written by Jeffrey Epstein before his first failed suicide attempt in prison. The document quickly dominated the Epstein news cycle, with several experts pointing out that it at least appeared to be authentic. While everyone was trying to make sense of this latest bombshell, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick appeared before the House Oversight Committee and revealed that his ties to Epstein were more extensive than he had previously admitted. During his closed-door testimony, Lutnick also walked back earlier claims that Epstein was “the greatest blackmailer ever.” After the interview, Rep. James Comer—who recently attempted to stymie the committee’s investigative powers—held a press conference where he explicitly denied that there was any cover-up. Rep. After Rep. James Comer abruptly canceled all future House Oversight hearings, many feared that momentum around the Epstein investigations would grind to a halt. But instead of slowing down, multiple parallel efforts have emerged to keep the pressure on. In the House, Rep. Robert Garcia and other Democrats filed a resolution to hold former AG Pam Bondi in civil contempt for skipping her April deposition, which has now been rescheduled for May 29th. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick is set to appear this Wednesday and a field hearing in Palm Beach with witnesses and victims is planned for May 12th. With the Epstein story back in the national spotlight, pressure on the Trump administration has intensified once again. But just as momentum appeared to be building—Rep. Nancy Mace publicly joined Democrats in calling for former US Attorney General Pam Bondi to be held in contempt and Amanda Ungaro expressed interest in providing testimony of her own—Rep. James Comer abruptly hit the brakes. In a startling move, Comer canceled all further Epstein hearings, effectively blocking any genuine attempts to uncover new information. He also indicated that some committee members may be open to pardoning Ghislaine Maxwell, Epstein’s closest co-conspirator. Meanwhile, the DOJ blocked international investigations by withholding files from UK Police, and United States Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick refused to answer any more questions about his relationship—financial or otherwise—to Epstein. In a developing story, the DOJ’s office of the inspector general is preparing to audit the department’s handling of the files and its adherence (or lack thereof) to the Epstein Files Transparency Act.
