Last week, a federal judge in New York granted final approval to Bank of America’s $72.5 million settlement with survivors of Jeffrey Epstein’s trafficking operation. As part of the settlement, the bank agreed to pay the victims, but did not admit to any wrongdoing. However, a report released earlier this month by Sen. Ron Wyden (D-OR) directly contradicted this framing – presenting evidence that the bank waited years to flag and report suspicious activity in Epstein’s accounts while continuing to profit from his business. Bank of America is now the third major bank to settle with Epstein’s victims, following similar agreements by JP Morgan Chase and Deutsche Bank in 2023.
Meanwhile, another federal judge in New York rejected Ghislaine Maxwell’s latest appeal to overturn her sex trafficking conviction. At the hearing, the judge categorically dismissed Maxwell’s assertion that her constitutional rights had been violated during her trial, calling the claims “frivolous.” Legal analysts say that Maxwell, who is currently serving a 20-year prison sentence, has exhausted all legal avenues for overturning her conviction – save, of course, a presidential pardon.
