Banking Chief Jes Staley appeared before House Oversight

One of the greatest cover-ups by our federal government in modern American history also requires non-government actors to perpetuate it; in this case, the bankers, executives, and financiers who moved Jeffrey Epstein’s money and shielded him for decades. Last Thursday, former JPMorgan Chase investment banking chair Jes Staley – who had extensive ties to Epstein – appeared before the House Oversight Committee for a closed-door interview attempting to downplay his relationship with the disgraced sex trafficker. As Epstein’s longtime private banker at JPMorgan, Staley helped keep the money flowing, allowing Epstein to funnel hundreds of millions of dollars through the bank for years (despite repeated warning signs), all while profiting handsomely from the relationship. After the hearing, Oversight Committee member Rep. Yassamin Ansari blasted Staley’s attempts to minimize his Epstein ties and criticized Acting AG Todd Blanche for failing to look more closely into Staley. That same day, Sen. Elizabeth Warren and Reps. Raja Krishnamoorthi and Ro Khanna sent a letter to Barclays – where Staley served as CEO for four years after leaving JP Morgan – demanding answers about the bank’s failure to adequately investigate Staley’s decades-long friendship with Epstein before hiring him.
Rep. Jamie Raskin, the top Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee, also continued the pre-recess push by launching an investigation into Epstein’s extensive international ties. In a letter to Blanche, Secretary Marco Rubio, and DNI nominee Jay Clayton, Raskin said there was ample evidence that Epstein had leveraged his relationship with President Trump with foreign actors and demanded records related to his connections in 19 countries.
